Everyone is now switching to Over The Top (OTT) video streaming for their daily dose of drama and catchup TV.
But what about live sports? This is the holy grail of broadcast TV – but it’s time may also be up.
Back in November 2014 I raised this prospect in a Business Spectator article on Foxtel’s future with the entry of Netflix.
But now in November 2015, one year later we see this is becoming a reality. In Hong Kong, the English Premier League football rights have been awarded to LeTV, a Chinese mainland OTT operator from August 2016. My company Hong Kong Broadband is working closely with LeTV to make this a great experience so that Hong Kongers can cut their expensive PayTV subscriptions.
Meanwhile, back in Australia Optus have snatched the English Premier League rights away from Foxtel also from August 2016. You can see some of my comments below in Australian Financial Review article on these developments.
So it seems that the changes in live sport broadcasting predicted 12 months ago are starting to become a reality.
